Kese Soprano interview with HipHopSix.Com

Exclamation INTERVIEW: Kese Soprano

OK, so it's been a while since our last quickfire and we're always on the lookout for all that's heated - step forth East Coast underground leader Kese Soprano... already locked down half the net, you know SiX had to find out what's up!

SiX: First off, let our readers know what's up - what's with the name dude - tell us the story?

Kese: My first name is Marquis, my grandmother always called me Kese so it kind of stuck with me forever. Soprano sort of came from chorus class back in the day.

SiX: So you're out of Jersey - how's that feel right now - what's the scene like since the days of big hitters like Naughty By Nature were running hiphop.. Jersey still got that fire, right?

Of course Jersey definitely still got that fire. Bunch of hungry lyricists out here.
__________________________________

...my passion definetly came around the time of Illmatic
__________________________________

SiX: What kinda time did you enter the game and what did you hear that brought you into the fold.. what song sparked your passion for HipHop?

I started recordins around 01, that's when I felt like this was something that was meant for me, my passion definitely came around the time Illmatic, Ready To Die, Enter the 36 Chambers and Doggystyle came out but I would have to say the song that sparked me was M.E.T.H.O.D. Man. I grew up a big Wu-Tang head.

SiX: OK, you also produce - how's that Kanye balancing act coming along for you - a lot of artists can't play both sides the field like that but you seem to be able to juggle..?

Yeah it's not easy but I love it, having a producers state of mind makes me study and appreciate music so much more.

SiX: What kinda gear you producing with - tell our readers about the studio setup?

I'm working with Pro Tools and mainly Reason 3 on the beat making side.
__________________________________

Sometimes I don't sleep, I just stay up writing...
__________________________________

SiX: Now it needs to be made clear that you're kinda big online - you got MySpace and that closed garden SOHH locked down - not a lot of artists can boast a profile like that - tell us, what level's you workin on? How hard you hustling?

I most certainly push myself to the limit, promoting myself and networking with other MC's, producers, fans. I try and give everyone something they can enjoy, and hope they tell a friend who Kese Soprano is.

SiX: How'd you feel the online revolution has shaped the way artists get on in this game.. the piracy, the torrents, the mass exposure - like it can be both a blessing and curse right? What's your feelings on it?

Yeah online makes it almost fair game, if you promote yourself hard you will be heard. that's the blessing. The hard part is setting yourself aside from everyone else with the same goal! the curse is that there are so many people making music some people write you off before you even send them a link or a webpage. You have to make the listeners feel special about having your product.

SiX: Now, you recently lost someone close to you and that inspired your writing – tell us about that… how did it affect you?

It affected me big time, how I view life in general.Sometimes I don't even sleep, I just stay up writing. On the writing side it opened my mind a bit. I put my heart and every thought in every line even more so now so whatever I am feeling will make it's way on to the page.

SiX: So tell us - what's next for you now - you're getting name dropped by some established people and you locking down the internet, what's that next step for Kese Soprano?

Well right now I got that Putting The Game On Life Support mixtape droppin' real soon with DJ Me$$iah and DJ Shortkidd, so look out for that on Mixgrind.com

SiX: Well thanks for the quickfire and give us those links so our readers can check you out..!

Check me out at www.myspace.com/kesesoprano kesesoprano.com coming real soon

A Conversation with DJ Shortkidd

Shortkidd 2

Me and the homie DJ Shortkidd chopped it up for a bit Sunday Conversation style and here's how it went down!

What's good Shortkidd?? nice to have yo here, first of tell us where you're from

Shortkidd: My Pleasure man, Im was born in the Bronx NY, moved upstate NY when i was still young, to a no name town called Brewster LOL. but i recently moved down to New Rochelle so i can Attend The Institute of Audio Research an Audio Engineering School in Manhattan.

What got you into djing?

Shortkidd: I was always curious when it came to the "1's n 2's" and how some of my biggest influences were so good at Scratching, Blending, Mixing etc. After learning some key things about music, i decided to give it a wing and well....here i am locally known as DJ Shortkidd of [Mixgrind Ent].

You're an emcee too, what and who inspired you to rhyme?

Shortkidd: I think after watching 8mile every white kid on the block wanted to give a shot at rapping, me being a corny little 7th grader at the time i really enjoyed listening to some Mainstream hip-hop, I tried spitting, and thought i was nice, bought some audio equipment became affiliated with some local artists and started Hitting the books, and by that i mean Studying Hip-hop from the roots up!, my biggest influences i would have to say is my older brother KuRRent, Ke$e Soprano and My friends who have supported my music throughout the years.

Tell us what else you do
is there anything you don't do??

Shortkidd: Haha thats a funny question, see it started out i wanted to Rap, then i learned to DJ, finally got enough money to afford Pro-tools, I guess the only thing i haven't tried yet is Producing, but ill be sure to conquer that very shortly! so Dr. Dre and Swiss better watch out! haha.

List your recent projects.

Shortkidd: My recent project that i am working on now i would have to say is Putting The Game on Life Support with my man Ke$e Soprano! and 2X Justo Award Nominee DJ Me$$iah. BE ON THE LOOK-OUT FOR THIS TAPE! its all around perfect, from production to lyricism!, every track is a banger in my opinion and quite frankly i haven't heard a mixtape like that in a minute!

How's you're brother Kurrent?

Shortkidd: KuRRent's doing just fine, right now he's taking some time off from rapping to concentrate on work, until his budget is up to par. than its back in studio mode for him, we should expect a mixtape out from him January 09'. So keep your ears open for that!

Any new things musically going on with him?

Shortkidd: Like I said he's taking some time off, but of course he's still writing and getting ready to bang out tracks for this tape when he has some free time, right now he's just had a busy schedule.

Do you dj at clubs, parties?

Shortkidd: I've been working the same gig for 2 years now at an Ice Rink over in Brewster, sounds lame but for 30$ h/r it works LOL. i also DJ on some featured nights at my grandfathers strip club in the bronx (Crazy Horse Cabaret). Parties when the opportunity comes, but I'm mostly just mixin' it up from home.

What are your plans for the future?

Shortkidd: I Would like to finnish school at IAR and gain enough knowledge to open up my own studio. Maybe start my own label with Ke$e and KuRRent but there are so many opportunities around in the industry I'll be happy just to get my foot in a local studio that pays well.

Thanks for your time homie! anything you want to say to the people?

Shortkidd: Just like to thank you for Interviewing me, Shout outs to DJ Me$$iah, Ke$e Soprano, KuRRent, Mixgrind.com, and make sure u buy Putting The Game on Life Support! coming REAL SOON!

1) I see in your setup that you have both an MPC and Fruity Loops. Which were you using first and do you use them together now?

I originally started to learn how to make beats on the MPC 2000XL. And to be honest…I tell everyone if you can get your hands on an MPC 2000XL go on and get that because it is pretty much one of the best machines in my mind to work with. Once I load a sample into it, I pretty much have free reign over it. There is no opening up this program and thing swinging everything over to that program. It’s a one stop spot. The only thing is, I don’t have the mobility with it. Now like all producers I had a rough spot where I was aching for dough and had to choose rent or the MPC. Hated to do it but the MPC had to go. Thus forcing me to get with the 9th Wonder backed FL Studio. It took me a little bit to get used to, but now I love using it. Right now I’m strictly FL Studio. And I’ve learned to do everything inside the program. I’ve remixed songs using just FL and created a lot of joints on it. I love the fact that if I load it on a laptop, I can pretty much make a beat any and everywhere.

2) You seem to have a lot of experience working with indie artists. How did you get started? I started in this game as a DJ, then I became an emcee. One of the main reasons I started making my own beats is so I didn’t have to wait on anyone for a track. Plus the fact that sometimes some producers don’t listen to artists and I didn’t want to always have to deal with that. As I started getting better with my craft, some of the guys that I spit with would come to me for a track. My boys Casino Dialz and Sinis were the first guys to trust in my sound enough to let me do their whole project. That lead to other people hearing my tracks and wanting to work with me. But to be honest things really started popping off when I started using MySpace more than normal. I would jump on MySpace and connect to indie artists and talk to them about working together. I’ve given away a lot of tracks in order to work with a lot of people. But hey…sometimes you have to do things like that. And now I can say I’ve worked with a variety of people such as Apathy from here in CT to Pestalance from Houston and Kehmak in Canada. I’ve come to realize that a lot of guys like working with me because of my unique beat style and sample selection and my ear for the music.

3) You replayed Bob James’ “Angela” (The theme to taxi) on “Latka Kravitz.” What did you play it on? Are you trained in keyboard or did u learn by ear?

The Latka Kravitz actually is the simple chopped up sample from the actually song. I never played it out. What I did was chop the piece I liked and placed them in the order that I would like to hear them song wise. A lot of people think I played it out because of how smoothly the chopped sample pieces connect. Of course the whole track was produced on the MPC for a beat CD project I did with my boy, MF Swayz. As far as being trained in keyboard, of course like everyone else I took classes in school…but I mostly play by ear.

4) Do you have a studio where you record? If so how did you put it together?

Right now I’ve started to get things set where I can record in my own crib. But I’ve recorded in various studios from Jaxsn Music, Studio 26, The Halfway House, etc. As for what I’m putting together in my crib, the pieces I have now are my lovely hand built PC running FL Studio, Adobe Audition and ACID Pro 6. I plan on getting my M-Audio interface so I can move up to Pro Tools or rock with Cubase.

5) Do you have any up-coming projects? Lord do I!! Right now I just finished remixing joints from Blak Philly.

I just finished doing a joint for Apathy as I mentioned before. I have projects from guys in my crew like Casino Dialz, Myk Fevah & Kinkade Tha Bully. I’m currently doing joints for Sinis, Original Soul, Pestalance, ROCKOLEONE, A Rock band named Rotary and others. And I’m really looking forward to hooking up with my old partners, The Forgotten Soulz, Doc Vaporz and Jimmy Fontaine on our upcoming joint. And as always, I’m always looking to work with more people.

To be considered for Hydrosonics send an MP3 or link to a song (imeem or Myspace is fine) to hydrosonics@nodfactor.com. Registered users will get preference in response.

New Jersey’s Finest “Kese Soprano”

Kese Soprano

The “Abstract” Kese Soprano check out his new single “Yeah” myspace.com/kesesoprano

My American Boy…Jersey Style

You know when you read “Soprano” attached to anything these days, you think of the quality and the show “The Soprano’s”. With that said I want to be the first or one of the first to introduce to the mainstream “Kese Soprano“. He is the first of a series presented here of Elite 1 Entertainment’s Artist of the Month. This will grow into a annual yearly, voted on by the online community “Artist of the Year” in different categories. Let’s get with the man, the artists known as Kese Soprano. Not only a great artists, and one who can be recognized to bring the east back to prominence, but a humble person and one who is a hard worker. Kese is also a producer, beat maker and yes from New Jersey. Quite a balancing act and yet he does it and does it well. His lyrics and beats are what represents the best about what we all love about East Coast music, the beats and the lyrics fueled by “real life“. What makes a person a fan of the gone-by days of Wu-Tang (Cream), DMX?, Nas (Illmatic) and Biggie? Kese got it, has it and BRINGS IT. His myspace rotates and keeps the online community knowledgable of what he is currently working on and who he is working with. The network of artists and business he deals with is extensitve. He is the only artists I know that can boast of working with Lady Luck too Cash & Khaled to a serious presence on SOHH (before the hack) One of the few posters who could actually have his music on The Forum. He is busy and business orientated. Kese recently lost a close person to him and created a song that is his “Song Cry“. There is so much more I can say about “OUR ARTIST OF THE MONTHKESE SOPRANO. I will let his myspace say it better for me. Look for in the upcoming months audio of live interviews of Kese and his process and how he views mainstream, underground and the future of New Jersey’s rap scene, the future of the East Coast and if they will ever have dominance again.

Looking for a “New Underground Artists” that you can ride too, listen too, sing along with, and who is speaking your language, the Youth’s language. Look no further than my man Kese Soprano.

Be Looking out for the new single produced by Cash & Khaled called “Yeah

Check out his myspace/kesesoprano
